Use of Weapons touched me like no book has touched me for a long time - Zakalwe's battles became mine and his past became mine. In my opinion this book is a lot more than just an adventure, it's about a man who has experienced too much and has seen too much, has fought too many battles and who has too much past he is trying to ignore and erase. I guess that it's possible to read this book as a space adventure, but I can't imagine how anybody can ignore the depth of this book. It all sounds like the basis for a good space adventure and that is also what the back page of the book tries to sell it as, but Use of Weapons is a lot more than that. He has been in a lot of wars, sometimes on the winning side, sometimes on the losing side, but always on what he thinks is the good side, because Zakalwe is not an ordinary mercenary, he works for the Culture, in their Special Circumstances division. Use of Weapons is about a mercenary who usually goes by the name Cheradenine Zakalwe - he is a couple of hundred years old and has seen a lot of battle. Buying Bank's Use of Weapons was a long shot - a friend had recommended the danish translation of Player of Games, but the (American) bookstore where I mail order most of my books didn't have PoG stocked, so I decided to try another Banks book (I have been wanting to read something by him, for quite some time, but just haven't gotten around to it). These policies sanction the violence that accompanies white rage to make that environment look legitimate. When I talk about white rage, I’m talking about the policies that undermine African American achievement and advancement. I think a lot of folks get white rage wrong. What is white rage and how does it apply to this moment? Carol Anderson Our conversation, which has been edited for length and clarity, also addresses how to put an end to it. I talked to Anderson, who wrote an entire book about white rage, about its meaning and how it has historically operated in America. It is predicated on a sense that only whites are legitimate Americans,” Anderson told me. It is the fear of a multicultural democracy. “White rage is the operational function of white supremacy. It is the rage that fueled the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol on January 6 in an attempt to dismantle America’s multicultural democracy - and it hasn’t gone away. It lives in criminal sentencing laws and plays out in a war on drugs that was waged against Black people. It lives in voter ID laws and manifests in the Black votes that are never cast. According to Anderson, white rage is legitimatized through the policies that make up the American political framework. We meet Arthur Riley’s gramma, who endured both a traumatic childhood and an abusive marriage, to become a strong woman who guided her grandchildren with wisdom. This Here Flesh is her first book, and it’s a collection of spiritual reflections, which are entwined with family stories.
